DR Congo Ebola Outbreak Surpasses 3,500 Cases, Kills 1,556, Officials Warn: how 13 outlets framed it

Carl Skau, acting head of the UN World Food Programme, told Reuters, “It’s the fastest-spreading Ebola epidemic that we have ever seen,” as officials warned the crisis needs greater international focus.

DW reported that the outbreak has surpassed the total number of cases recorded during the country’s deadliest epidemic between 2018 and 2020, which killed nearly 2,300 people among about 3,500 infections.

The outbreak is centered in eastern Congo’s Ituri province and has also spread to other areas, including North Kivu and South Kivu, as health workers face challenges from insecurity and armed groups operating across parts of the region.

The World Health Organization has said vaccine development efforts are underway, while a clinical trial for a Bundibugyo Ebola vaccine has already begun with the first volunteer receiving a dose.

As cases surge, Africa CDC director general Jean Kaseya said at a briefing Thursday that only about 1 in 8 — fewer than 18,000 people — have been identified for the contact tracing list.

Kaseya warned, “If we don’t master this indicator, we’ll not stop this outbreak,” and said, “This is not the case.”

Daily Nation, citing Reuters, reported that Angele Gapio, head of emergencies for the Caritas charity in Bunia, said awareness campaigns were failing and frontline responders were exhausted and traumatised.

Gapio told Reuters, “The disease has now settled in the community,” adding that people continue to seek treatment from traditional healers and the chain of transmission continues.

CNN reported that WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, “the outbreak in DRC is continuing to outpace the response,” with intense transmission in Ituri remaining the biggest concern.

The Guardian reported that Clean Clothes Campaign spokesperson Ineke Zeldenrust said the audit system was “fundamentally broken” because “audits consistently miss the most dangerous conditions,” but the Ebola-focused sources instead describe vaccine research and response capacity as the immediate stakes.

Anadolu Ajansı said the virus has affected five provinces—Haut-Uele, Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, and Tshopo—and that no vaccine or specific treatment has been approved for the Bundibugyo virus.

Tech Times described contact tracing as the only available containment tool when no vaccine exists, and it said the WHO requires “90 to 95 percent” of all identified contacts to break an Ebola transmission chain.

The same report warned that the system is structurally blind to the majority of the outbreak, quoting an anonymous DRC doctor: “You cannot investigate, you cannot do contact tracing with so few epidemiologists.”
