Aden – The wave of displacement in Yemen is accelerating as military confrontations escalate. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced that the number of displaced people has risen to approximately 86,000, an increase of nearly 10,000 in a single day.
The UN agency stated that the number of displaced people reached 85,818, up from approximately 76,000 the previous day.
These figures reveal a sharp acceleration in displacement during September, with more than 82,000 people forced to leave their homes since the beginning of the month, coinciding with the escalation of clashes between the Houthis and government forces.
The IOM had previously warned that the displacement crisis in Yemen is worsening rapidly and “developing by the hour,” amidst ongoing military operations.
Bab al-Mandab at the Heart of the Escalation
The wave of displacement coincided with the Houthis’ large-scale offensive on the western coast and the Bab al-Mandab Strait, leading to the fighting spreading to new areas and forcing even more residents to flee.
The surge in the number of displaced people underscores the scale of the humanitarian consequences of the escalation in a country already grappling with one of the most complex humanitarian crises after years of war.
