Colombia’s town of Raquira, in the department of Boyaca, has once again captured international attention thanks to a project that combines artisanal tradition, cultural identity, and tourism. The municipality, widely recognized as Colombia’s pottery capital, has officially earned a Guinness World Record after building the largest clay piggy bank in the world, a massive structure that has quickly become one of the country’s newest tourist attractions.
The monumental creation was unveiled and certified in June 2026, allowing Colombia to surpass Germany, which previously held this unique world record. Beyond the achievement itself, the project aims to showcase the work of local artisans and strengthen the regional economy through cultural tourism.
A giant piggy bank that broke a Guinness World Record in Raquira, Boyaca
The enormous piggy bank is located at the Pueblito de Barro theme park, just a few kilometers from Ráquira’s main square. The structure stands out for its impressive dimensions: it reaches 9 meters (29.5 feet) in height, stretches more than 10 meters (32.8 feet) in length, and weighs approximately 30 tons.
To bring the project to life, local artisans used clay as the primary material, reinforced with concrete and steel to ensure the structure’s stability and durability. The result is a monumental piece that preserves the essence of the traditional ceramic piggy banks that generations of artisans in the region have produced for decades.
One of its most remarkable features is its symbolic storage capacity. According to the project’s promoters, the giant pig could hold up to 127,000 Colombian 1,000-peso coins, equivalent to 127 million Colombian pesos (about US$37,000).
The structure also incorporates elements representing Colombian identity. Among them is a jersey honoring Colombian football star Luis Díaz, a detail intended to connect the artwork with contemporary symbols of national pride.

A tribute to Raquira’s artisanal heritage
For the people of Raquira, obtaining the Guinness World Record represents far more than an international title. The project serves as recognition of the artisanal legacy that has made this town in Boyaca one of the most important ceramic centers in Latin America.
For decades, generations of craftsmen have worked with clay to create decorative pieces, household items, and piggy banks that are sold throughout Colombia. The giant piggy bank was conceived as a way to celebrate that ancestral knowledge and demonstrate the creativity and skill of the region’s master potters.
In addition to its record-breaking dimensions, the structure was designed to offer visitors a complete cultural experience. Inside, guests can explore a gallery dedicated to the traditional clay piggy banks produced in Raquira, learning about the evolution of one of the most iconic elements of Colombian popular culture.
The attraction also features a lookout area where visitors can enjoy panoramic views and take photographs of one of the largest handcrafted structures ever built in the country.
