A small chemical tanker operating near Yemen sent out a distress signal on the morning of Friday, July 17, and appears to have been taken over by as many as seven armed pirates. Authorities in Somalia and other regions are looking into the situation as the vessel seems to be moving toward the Somali coastline.

The ship is being identified as the Asana, reportedly managed from South Korea and owned by a company based in the Marshall Islands. Its particulars are uncertain; Equasis records its flag as unknown, while most sources indicate it is registered in Tanzania. Constructed in 1992, the vessel has a deadweight tonnage of 10,960, measures 127 meters in length, and has been sailing as the Asana for the last three years, starting in 2023.

The boarding took place roughly 63 nautical miles south of Al Mukalla, Yemen. This region has become a focus for pirate activity in recent weeks, with multiple ships reporting being approached. Earlier in July, pirates boarded a bulk carrier named Golden Arsenal, but the crew locked themselves in a citadel, prompting a response from the Indian Navy. The pirates abandoned the ship after failing to break into the citadel and reach the crew.

Initial reports stated that the Asana was adrift, but MSCIO now indicates the vessel appears to be moving again. Ambrey has reported that a Korean warship was trying to intercept the ship.

This event occurs as reports suggest that negotiations for the release of seafarers from three vessels held off Somalia since April have reached an advanced stage. A total of 44 crew members are being detained on the ships Honour 25, Eureka, and Sward, with the IMO, Egyptian authorities, and others voicing concern for their safety. Egypt has directed its representatives to step up efforts to free its nationals who were abducted from these vessels.

The rise in oil and product prices due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz has made these ships more attractive targets for pirates. Two of the currently detained vessels are product tankers, and unconfirmed media reports indicate that the pirates have raised their financial demands for the release of the crews.
