EBOMAF Group, the construction and real estate powerhouse led by Burkina Faso’s richest man, Mahamadou Bonkoungou, has begun work on a major infrastructure project in Gabon — the long-awaited Andem International Airport. Groundbreaking took place in March 2024, officially launching the FCFA220 billion ($370 million) development, which is expected to be completed within four years.
The project took a significant step forward when Gabon’s transitional leader, President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, laid the foundation stone at a high-profile ceremony. First proposed more than a decade ago, the airport is finally moving from plans to reality—and is expected to open its doors before the end of the decade.
But the airport is just one piece of a much bigger picture. Gabon is pushing ahead with efforts to modernize its infrastructure and attract new investment. EBOMAF has also been tapped to lead the development of Libreville 2 — a brand-new city designed for smart living and sustainable growth. The government’s decision to entrust EBOMAF with both flagship projects reflects the company’s strong performance across the region and its ability to deliver on ambitious visions.
Inside Gabon’s 30,000-hectare airport vision
Andem International Airport, Spanning 30,000 hectares, will be built to international standards, with a dedicated presidential terminal, expansive parking, and state-of-the-art aviation facilities. Once completed, it is set to become a key gateway for Gabon and Central Africa. Similar to how Senegal’s Blaise Diagne International Airport played a pivotal role in the development of Diamniadio, Andem is expected to lay the groundwork for Gabon’s next phase of urban growth.
Located just 20 kilometers from Libreville, Libreville 2 is being developed as Gabon’s next major economic hub. The 13,000-hectare city will feature an “agropole,” a specialized area for agricultural processing, trade, and export. The goal is to bridge the gap between farmers, processors, and markets, creating new job opportunities while supporting the country’s agrifood sector expansion.
Libreville 2’s design focuses on innovation and sustainability. A new rail link will connect the city to Libreville, providing residents with a convenient commuting option and fostering business growth. The city’s master plan includes roads, green spaces, research centers, and other infrastructure designed to promote long-term livability while maintaining environmental harmony.
A legacy beyond concrete and steel
EBOMAF’s involvement reflects the group’s deep experience delivering large-scale projects across Africa. From airports in San Pedro and Korhogo in Côte d’Ivoire to the ZACA commercial zone in Ouagadougou, the company has consistently handled complex developments with precision and reliability.
“We’re proud to have been chosen for the construction of the new Andem International Airport,” said Mahamadou Bonkoungou, CEO of EBOMAF. “This project is an important step for Gabon’s development and future connectivity. We’re fully committed to delivering top-tier infrastructure that matches the country’s ambitions.”
Now 58, Bonkoungou has built far more than just a construction empire. He’s become one of the most influential business figures in West Africa. EBOMAF’s project pipeline alone is valued at over $3 billion, but his interests extend well beyond construction. He owns Liza Transport, a luxury jet charter company, and IB Holding, a rising financial group.
In recent years, Bonkoungou has pushed deeper into banking, acquiring the Togolese Bank for Commerce and Industry (BTCI). He also runs Bonkoungou Distribution, a key player in the machinery and equipment sector. With an estimated fortune north of $250 million, he’s helping to shape the region’s economic future — one project at a time.
