Cyclists from Burkina Faso dominated PruRide 2026 as they swept both male and female elite categories at the 7th edition held on September 6, 2026, along the University Farm Road (Borteyman Highway) in Accra.
Soumaila Ibuboudo won the men’s ride, with seven other riders placing 2nd to 8th, while two Ghanaian riders picked the 9th and 10th positions.
In the female category, Burkina Faso’s national female champion, Awa Bongo Awa, won the race with two other compatriots following suit.
The male race covered 112 kilometres while the female race covered 67.2 kilometres.
Both male and female winners received 15,000 Ghana cedis each, while the second and third-place winners took home 10,000 and 5000 Ghana cedis, respectively. Riders from 4th to 10th position took home 1,000 Ghana cedis each.
Cyclists from Nigeria conspicuously missed out on the medal presentation and awards ceremony as none made it through to the first ten.
The ceremony was graced by the Ambassador of Burkina Faso, His Excellency David Kabre, the National Sports Authority boss, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Deputy CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey, Prudential Life Insurance CEO Mrs Jane Mingle, Ghana Olympic Committee President Lawyer Richard Akpokavi and Board Member Nana Adu Mankata II.
Speaking in an interview with GBCOnline, his excellency David Kabre expressed his delight at the astounding performance of Team Burkina Faso and commended the organizers for the opportunity.
He reaffirmed his commitment to work with the Ghanaian community to strengthen the already strong relationship between the two countries.
General Secretary for the Ghana Cycling Federation, Shaban Mohammed said the Elite Race featured riders who hold a UCI license or club membership and could ride to accumulate points for Olympic qualifications.
In her closing remarks, Chief Executive Officer of Prudential Life Assurance, Mrs Jane Mingle, expressed heartfelt gratitude to all participating organizations who contributed to the success of the event.
She also maintained that beyond the competitive element, PRURide provides a platform for cyclists and cycling clubs to ride for health while contributing to the visibility and growth of cycling in Ghana.
