Bulls trample Cardiff at Loftus

The Vodacom Bulls scored six tries to beat Cardiff in Pretoria on Saturday and boost their hopes of a top-two finish in the Vodacom URC.

The 45-21 bonus-point victory took Jake White’s side into second spot above the Glasgow Warriors, who had yet to play Benetton in Treviso. Cardiff’s away kit was like a red flag to a Bulls team that charged into a 10-0 lead.

Three points from an early scrum penalty – a sign of things to come – was followed by a try to centre Harold Vorster, who chased down winger Canan Moodie’s kick.

Having slotted two goal kicks, flyhalf Johan Goosen left the field in the 12th minute on a golf cart after suffering yet another injury, to be replaced by Keagan Johannes. It didn’t hinder the Herd, though, as tighthead prop Wilco Louw barged over and Moodie benefited from Cardiff’s inability to deal with a kick from fullback Willie le Roux.

The Bulls then secured the bonus point just before the break when Cameron Hanekom broke away from the back of a scrum, and Johannes’ third conversion made it 31-0. Winger Sebastian de Klerk extended the hosts’ lead early in the second half after collecting a Le Roux chip kick, before flanker Alex Mann finally got Cardiff on the board.

Le Roux then released De Klerk for his second after which the Bulls emptied their bench. Cardiff finished the game strongly, scoring two late tries, but couldn’t get another for a bonus point.

The Bulls will conclude their league-stage campaign with a match against the Dragons at Loftus next Saturday, before hosting a quarter-final on 31 May.
