Aviation key to Tanzania’s economic growth, says Zanzibar airport chief

Unguja. The director general of the Zanzibar Airport Authority, Mr Seif Abdallah Juma, has emphasised the vital role of the aviation sector in Tanzania’s economic development.

He warned that any setbacks in this sector could significantly impact the country’s overall economic progress.

His remarks were made during a special fundraising event held by Puma Energy Tanzania for aviation stakeholders on March 30, 2025, in Unguja.

The event aimed to highlight the importance of the aviation sector in fostering national income.

Mr Juma noted the impressive growth of the sector, mentioning that in February 2025 alone, a total of 82,750 visitors arrived on the islands.  Of these, 75,548—representing 91.3 percent—entered Zanzibar via Abeid Aman Karume Airport.

“The aviation sector is crucial not only for tourism but also for related industries. If it faces any challenges, the ripple effect could hinder the overall economy of the country,” he stated.

He further outlined the important role of the Zanzibar Airport Authority, which works closely with the Zanzibar Utilities Regulatory Authority (URA) to ensure that the airport’s infrastructure and fuel standards meet international benchmarks.

Mr Juma also commended Puma Energy Tanzania for its long-standing contributions to the sector, especially for its services at Abeid Aman Karume International Airport.

He praised the company for maintaining high service standards, which have helped ensure the stability of the sector, even in the face of occasional incidents involving aircraft.

“Puma Energy has been providing excellent services at the airport, and their commitment to maintaining international standards has contributed to the sector’s stability,” he said, reaffirming his commitment to ongoing collaboration with the company.

Ms Fatma Abdallah, CEO of Puma Energy Tanzania, emphasized the company’s dedication to reinvesting its profits back into the community.

Puma Energy, in which the Tanzanian government holds a 50 percent stake, has been actively supporting educational and community initiatives.

“A significant portion of our efforts goes into initiatives with the Karume Institute of Technology (KIST), where we place five students each year in aviation-related roles. Those who excel are then offered opportunities at airports in Tanzania, and some even work internationally,” Ms. Abdallah noted.

Additionally, Puma Energy has made significant contributions to Kisiwandui School, including renovations and the creation of facilities for students with special needs, helping them achieve their educational goals.

The event underscored the growing recognition of the aviation sector’s integral role in Tanzania’s economic future, with continued investments from both the government and the private sector paving the way for sustainable development.
