Apple is developing cameras for the Apple Watch, aiming to integrate AI features like Visual Intelligence within the next two years, reports Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

Standard Apple Watch models will house cameras “inside the display,” while the Apple Watch Ultra will feature them on the side, near the digital crown. These cameras will allow the Apple Watch to “see the outside world and use AI to deliver relevant information,” mirroring Apple’s rumoured camera-equipped AirPods.

These devices will utilize Visual Intelligence, a feature debuted on the iPhone 16, which leverages cameras to perform tasks like adding event details to calendars or retrieving restaurant information. Apple intends to power this feature with its own AI models by 2027, coinciding with the expected release of these new Apple Watches and AirPods.

The integration of Visual Intelligence and other AI features into Apple’s wearables hinges on the leadership of Mike Rockwell, who is also tasked with expediting the delayed Siri LLM upgrade. Rockwell, who previously led the Vision Pro project, will continue to work on visionOS.

visionOS is expected to power future Apple wearables, including AR glasses similar to Meta’s Orion concept, which will likely feature significant AI capabilities, though this technology is still several years away.
