Super-Sub Amad Delivers After Ecuador’s Bright Start
The 23-year-old was a surprise omission from Emerse Fae’s starting XI, beginning the match on the bench as Ivory Coast took on Ecuador in their Group F opener.
The South Americans looked the more dangerous side in the early stages, striking the crossbar twice through John Yeboah and Alan Minda while dominating possession and territory during a lively opening half hour.
Despite Ecuador’s bright start, the Elephants remained in the contest and Fae turned to Amad just 10 minutes into the second half, introducing the attacker in place of Bazoumana Toure.
The substitution proved decisive.
With the game finely poised, Wilfried Singo produced a powerful run down the right flank before picking out Amad, who calmly side-footed the ball beyond Hernan Galindez to score what proved to be the winning goal.
The strike not only handed Ecuador a painful start to their World Cup campaign.
Manchester United Star Breaks Ivorian World Cup Record
In finding the back of the net, Amad became the youngest Ivorian player ever to score at a FIFA World Cup, achieving the feat at the age of 23 years and 11 months.
The previous record belonged to Salomon Kalou, who was 24 years and 10 months old when he scored against North Korea during Ivory Coast’s 3-0 victory at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
Ecuador Unbeaten Run Comes To An End
The landmarks did not end there for the former Sunderland loanee.
His decisive goal also ended Ecuador’s 19-game unbeaten streak, inflicting their first defeat in 22 months and giving Ivory Coast a perfect start to life in North America.
Speaking after the match, Amad expressed his delight at helping his country make a positive start to the tournament while stressing the importance of maintaining the same mentality going forward.
“We needed that. We came here to make history,” Diallo said after the match, per the New Telegraph.
“We still have two more games ahead, and we must approach them with the same mentality and try to win them.”
