A Diplomat Beyond Diplomacy: In Commendation Of Her Excellency Fatou Bom Bensouda And The Gambia’s Mission In The United Kingdom

By Melville Robertson Roberts

There are appointments that merely fill positions, and there are appointments that elevate the institutions they are intended to serve. The appointment of Her Excellency Fatou Bom Bensouda as High Commissioner of the Republic of The Gambia to the United Kingdom belongs firmly in the latter category.

I do not make this observation casually. Having had the privilege of serving at the senior echelons of The Gambia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with an understanding of how our diplomatic missions operate across the world, I believe praise should be given where it is genuinely earned. The Gambian High Commission in the United Kingdom has distinguished itself as one of our most visible, accessible, engaged and progressive missions abroad. Much of this reflects the dynamic and strategic leadership of Her Excellency Fatou Bom Bensouda, supported by an equally committed team of diplomats and staff.

What particularly distinguishes Her Excellency is her presence. She understands that diplomacy does not begin and end behind the doors of a High Commission. She is present when Gambians gather, when communities celebrate, when they mourn and when they observe their religious and cultural traditions. She does not simply appear for the photographs and formalities. She stays, listens, participates and engages.

Her presence at the Sang Marie Mass in Nottingham on 15 August,2026 was another remarkable example. Here is a devout and practising Muslim woman sitting through more than two hours of a Christian High Mass and participating fully and respectfully. This was neither an isolated gesture nor something she has done only once or twice. Her Excellency consistently makes herself present wherever Gambians gather, regardless of religion, ethnicity, region or background.

That conduct speaks powerfully to the Gambia we have always cherished. Ours is a country where mosques and churches stand alongside each other, where Muslims celebrate with Christians and Christians celebrate with Muslims, and where religious difference has traditionally strengthened rather than divided our communities. For the highest representative of our Republic in the United Kingdom to embody those values so naturally is diplomacy at its finest.

Those who follow Gambian community activities across Britain will recognise the pattern. Her Excellency shows up. She understands that diaspora diplomacy requires more than official meetings, communiqués and engagements with the host government. It requires leaving London and meeting Gambians where they live, worship and gather. It requires accessibility, humility and a genuine connection with the people one has been appointed to represent.

Perhaps this should not surprise us. Before assuming her present diplomatic responsibilities, Fatou Bom Bensouda had already carried the Gambian name onto one of the most consequential international stages, serving as Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court. What is particularly striking is that such international stature has never translated into distance from ordinary Gambians. Someone who has walked the corridors of international power remains equally comfortable sitting among her compatriots at a community gathering.

The High Commissioner’s achievements must also be understood alongside the professionalism of the men and women serving with her. The diplomats, consular officers, administrative personnel and entire staff of the Gambian High Commission deserve our commendation. Leadership sets the tone, but an effective mission is ultimately the product of a committed team. The positive visibility and accessibility of this Mission reflect a collective dedication to service.

I have never believed that patriotism requires silence when governments get things wrong. By the same measure, fairness requires us to acknowledge when they get things right. Whatever political differences any of us may have with the administration of President Adama Barrow, if President Barrow got one appointment emphatically right, the appointment of Her Excellency Fatou Bom Bensouda to represent The Gambia in the United Kingdom must rank amongst them.

Public service must ultimately be judged by service, not titles, protocol or proximity to power. Her Excellency Fatou Bom Bensouda continues to demonstrate that principle through her accessibility, humility and willingness to be present across communities and across faiths.

Her presence at the Sang Marie Mass was therefore more than attendance at another community event. It represented something much greater: a devout Muslim honouring a Christian tradition, a diplomat standing among the people she represents, and a distinguished international figure remaining firmly connected to ordinary Gambians.

To Her Excellency Fatou Bom Bensouda, her diplomatic team and the entire staff of the Gambian High Commission in the United Kingdom, your service deserves recognition and commendation. May the standard you are setting become the standard by which Gambian missions around the world are measured.
