Woolworths is launching a new ‘after dark’ delivery service, allowing customers to purchase deliveries from Woolies Foodstops via Uber Eats, all the way up till midnight. Partnering with Engen Quickshop, Woolworths has trialled the service in certain parts of the country to “exceptional demand,” claims Uber Eats general manager for grocery & retail, Cikida Gcali.
So successful that it accounted for nearly 20% of participating stores’ profits, according to a press release.
Woolworths goes Dark Mode
Customers can access ‘Woolies after dark’ by searching for ‘Woolies’ on the Uber Eats app. It’s available at 24 Woolworths Foodstops in Gauteng, KZN, and the Western Cape, with nine more launching by the end of March. It can currently be used by customers living close to these Engens:
- KZN: Engen 45th, Engen Mitchell Park, Engen Fairway, Engen Illala Ridge, Engen Richards Bay, Engen Ballito and Engen Malvern.
- Western Cape: Engen on Orange, Engen Vineyard, Engen Paradyskloof and Engen La Rochelle.
- Gauteng: Engen Main Road (Bryanston), Engen Fairland, Engen William Nicol, Engen Edenburg, Engen Rivonia, Engen Woodlands, Engen Conrad, Engen Golden Harvest, Engen Willowcrest, Engen Kyalami Gardens, Engen Rembrandt Park, Engen Oxford Road and Engen Summit Convenience.
And is coming to these areas soon:
- Western Cape: Engen Sea Point, Engen Meadowridge, Engen Sonnendal, Engen Settlers Way, Engen Tyger Waterfront.
- Gauteng: Engen Technopark, Engen Magalieskruin, Engen Bakenkop.
The retail store promises that all products are part of its cold chain, ensuring the same quality as its own delivery app, Woolies Dash. The service should come in handy on nights when certain products that are usually hard to access, are needed on short notice. Particularly things like first aid material, alcohol, and certain nighttime activity protective measures.
It’s worth considering that petrol station products often bear an added accessibility markup that makes them pricier than usual. Adding Uber Eats’s fees, and then Woolworths’s cut on top of that may lead to an inane convenience tax for using the service. How badly do you want those Chuckles?
