Severe thunderstorms expected in four provinces

The South African Weather Service has issued warnings for severe thunderstorms in parts of North West, Free State, Gauteng, and Limpopo this week.

After a warm and sunny weekend, temperatures are expected to drop significantly, with rain starting from Tuesday afternoon.

“Isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers are anticipated over the central and eastern parts of the country, with severe thunderstorms possible and damaging winds along the south-west coast,” stated the Weather Service.

In Gauteng, residents can expect partly cloudy and cool to warm weather, with isolated showers and thundershowers, particularly in the late afternoons and evenings. For Pretoria, the forecast indicates a minimum temperature of 17°C and a maximum of 27°C on Wednesday, with a 70% chance of thunderstorms. In Johannesburg, temperatures are expected to reach a high of 24°C, with a 70% chance of rain.

Weather Service predicts thunderstorms

The weather service has also issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms leading to localised flooding of susceptible areas and roads and settlements as well as localised damage to infrastructure, settlements, property, vehicles, livelihood and livestock.

Severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours resulting in localised flooding are forecast. Residents are urged to be cautious of strong and damaging winds and excessive lightning. The weather service has not predicted any hail yet but thunderstorms are expected from Wednesday until Friday in four provinces.
