The US government has turned down a long-anticipated reconstruction plan for Gaza that was supported by Arab leaders.
“They stated that President Trump prefers his own approach, which involves removing Palestinian residents and transforming the area into a US-owned “riviera.”
The reconstruction proposal from Egypt suggests that Hamas should hand over control to a temporary administration until a reformed Palestinian Authority can take over, allowing the 2 million Palestinians in Gaza to stay, unlike Trump’s plan.
Israel has dismissed any involvement of the Palestinian Authority in Gaza’s future. The Arab nations’ $53 billion plan aims to rebuild Gaza by 2030, starting with the removal of unexploded ordnance and clearing debris from the destruction caused by Israeli military actions.
National Security Council spokesman Brian Hughes emphasized that the current situation in Gaza is unlivable due to debris and unexploded bombs.
He reiterated Trump’s commitment to a vision of a Hamas-free Gaza and expressed hope for future discussions to achieve peace in the region.
The ceasefire in Gaza, which has been in effect since January, is uncertain after its initial phase ended recently.
Israel is considering an alternative US proposal to extend the ceasefire and secure the release of hostages taken during Hamas’s attack on October 7, 2023. Meanwhile, Israel has restricted essential supplies to Gaza to pressure Hamas into compliance, raising concerns about a potential return to conflict.
During the summit that unveiled the Gaza plan, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi said that genuine peace cannot be achieved without establishing a “stable governance structure.”
