For Dungeons & Dragons enthusiasts craving tabletop adventures beyond the physical realm, Wizards of the Coast has unveiled Sigil, a 3D virtual tabletop (VTT) experience. Imagine a digital recreation of your favourite D&D setup: virtual game boards, miniatures, dice, and character sheets, all rendered in 3D. Sigil isn’t a full-fledged video game like Baldur’s Gate; it retains the core tabletop experience of moving static miniatures, but adds dynamic digital touches like animated spell effects and realistic lighting. It’s akin to having a premium, digitally enhanced D&D set accessible to players worldwide.
Sigil joins the ranks of 3D VTTs, with BouncyRock Entertainment’s TaleSpire being a notable competitor. However, their business models differ. TaleSpire offers a one-time purchase, while Sigil, though free to explore and join games, requires a D&D Beyond Master Tier subscription for hosting multiplayer sessions and unlocking advanced features.

Sigil’s key advantage lies in its seamless integration with D&D Beyond. Players can effortlessly transfer their existing character sheets, equipment, and abilities, streamlining the transition to the virtual tabletop.
Sigil provides extensive customization tools, including asset libraries, brushes, and lighting effects, allowing players to create immersive maps and personalize their miniatures. Realistic virtual dice rolls and detailed miniature customization options further enhance the tabletop experience. “We wanted them to feel kind of painted, but kind of realistic,” Wizards of the Coast explained, aiming to capture the essence of high-end miniatures.

Powered by Unreal Engine 5, Sigil demands a capable gaming PC. While minimum system requirements are modest, D&D Beyond recommends a more robust setup for optimal performance. Currently Windows-only, Wizards of the Coast envisions expanding Sigil’s compatibility to consoles, mobile devices, and even unconventional platforms.
Interested adventurers can sign up with their D&D Beyond account on the product page. For those seeking alternatives, TaleSpire remains a highly regarded option.
