Volvo ES90 Is Coming With Faster Charging, Longer Range And Smarter Tech

The new Volvo ES90 sets a benchmark for electric performance, featuring cutting-edge 800-volt technology that enables rapid charging and extended driving range. With the ability to add 300 kilometres in just 10 minutes and a total range of up to 700 kilometres, it’s the most efficient electric Volvo to date.

The ES90 debuts Volvo’s 800V system, bringing faster charging, improved performance, and enhanced efficiency. Compared to conventional 400V systems, it generates less heat and allows ultra-fast charging up to 350kW without straining the battery. Lighter e-motors and components further reduce weight, optimizing efficiency, acceleration, and range.

“Our 800V technology marks another significant upgrade for our customers as we move toward full electrification,” says Anders Bell, Chief Engineering and Technology Officer.

“It makes our electric cars even more efficient, helps you charge faster, and go further on a single charge.”

A new in-house battery management system enhances the charging experience, cutting charge time from 10% to 80% by 30%, now down to 20 minutes. This is thanks in part to adaptive charging software from Breathe Battery Technologies, a Volvo Cars Tech Fund investment.

Sustainability

The ES90 advances Volvo’s sustainability goals with extensive use of recycled and bio-based materials. 29% of its aluminium and 18% of its steel come from recycled sources, along with 16% recycled polymers. Inside, FSC-certified wood panels contribute to an eco-friendly interior.

It also features Volvo’s battery passport, which uses blockchain technology to track the origins of lithium, cobalt, nickel, and graphite, offering transparency on sourcing and CO2 footprint.

Volvo’s advanced computing system

The ES90 is Volvo’s most powerful car in terms of computing capacity, featuring a dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin configuration. This system processes up to 508 trillion operations per second, managing safety features, car sensors, and battery optimization.

With an eightfold improvement in AI compute power, it enables continuous enhancements via over-the-air updates, expanding deep learning models from 40 million to 200 million parameters over time.

A smarter, software-defined car

Built on Volvo’s SPA2 architecture, the ES90 is the second vehicle based on the Superset tech stack, following the EX90. This single set of hardware and software modules underpins all future electric Volvos, enabling faster software updates and synchronized improvements across the lineup.

“The Volvo ES90 is one of the most technically advanced cars on the market today and is designed to improve over time,” adds Bell.

“Built on our state-of-the-art Superset tech stack, it puts safety at the forefront.”

Future updates may include improved connectivity, enhanced safety features, and optimized battery performance tailored to driving patterns.

As part of Volvo’s commitment to continuous improvement, EX90 owners will receive an upgrade to the dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin system at no additional cost.

Safe space technology

The ES90 incorporates Volvo’s Safe Space Technology, designed to enhance driver and passenger safety. Equipped with lidar, five radars, seven cameras, and twelve ultrasonic sensors, it continuously monitors surroundings and proactively prevents accidents. An advanced driver-understanding system further enhances safety by detecting potential risks in real time.

“We innovate in all areas of technology to become a leader in software-defined cars,” Bell concludes.

“By combining core computing power with our Superset tech stack, we can now make safer cars more efficiently than ever before.”

The ES90 will be officially unveiled on March 5, marking a new era of high-performance, sustainable, and smart electric mobility from Volvo.
