James Rodriguez Retires From Colombian National Team

Colombian superstar James Rodriguez has announced his retirement from the Colombian national team on Tuesday afternoon. Rodriguez made a total of 131 total appereances for ‘la tricolor’, only behind David Ospina, and scored 31 goals, following Radamel Falcao Garcia, who scored 36. The former captain is also the all-time assist leader with over 35 all-time assists with the Tricolor.

James Rodriguez will always be remembered for his iconic 2014 World Cup performance, where he was the FIFA World Cup Golden Boot winner after scoring six goals in five matches. He also won the 2014 FIFA Puskas Award after his iconic chest volley goal against Uruguay in the World Cup round of 16.

The ’10’ was also the last captain to lead Colombia to a Copa America final. In 2024, he won the player of the tournament award after leading the national team in a run to the final, which was lost against then World Champions Argentina in Miami.

James Rodriguez made his debut for Colombia against Bolivia

Before making his debut against Bolivia on Oct. 11, 2011, he was already tipped to be a superstar for the national team. He captained the U-20 ‘Tricolor’ at the 2011 Toulon Tournament, which Colombia won, as well as in the FIFA U-20 World Cup hosted in Colombia.

His debut came under coach Leonel Alvarez, in La Paz. During the 2-1 win against the Bolivians, he was named man of the match. From his debut on, James would always deliver for the national team, while he shone in Europe.

James Rodriguez will go down as the best player in the history of the Colombian national team. He not only set an all-time record with six assists at the 2024 Copa America, surpassing Lionel Messi’s 5 in 2021, but is also the only Colombian player to score five or more consecutive goals in World Cup matches. He is also Colombia’s all-time top scorer and assist provider in World Cup qualification history.

The time to step aside

Since the end of Colombia’s participation in the 2026 World Cup against Switzerland, rumors of James’s retirement have spread through national media. It had become clear that the time to step aside had come, especially after what was an underwhelming tournament from the #10.

Others from his generation had made the announcement before him. Juan Fernando Quintero announced his retirement from the national team a few weeks back. Juan Guillermo Cuadrado is apparently not under consideration by coach Nestor Lorenzo.

James, now officially an Atletico Nacional player, opens the national team for a new batch of youngsters who are led by Luis Diaz, and will look to equal or surpass what was achieved during his time with the tricolor. The question now is: Who will be Colombia’s new #10?
