A New Cuban Double Corona For Germany

A new, large Cuban cigar will soon be appearing in cigar shops across Germany, the Por Larrañaga 35 Aniversario Regional Edición Alemania. (Alemania is the Spanish word for Germany.) The cigar is a prominente size, better known to cigar lovers as a double corona, and it measures 7 5/8 inches long by 49 ring gauge. It’s not only a big cigar, but it comes in a massive package, a cabinet of 50 cigars. Only 2,000 boxes, each of them individually numbered, are being produced on this run. Each cigar will retail for 35 euros, around $40. The cigars should be on sale soon, according to a statement by Fifth Avenue Products Trading GmbH, the official distributor of Cuban cigars for Germany, Austria and Poland.

Of course, the Por Larrañaga brand is considerably older than 35 years. It’s Cuba’s oldest cigar brand that’s still in production, founded nearly two centuries ago by Ignacio Larrañaga in 1834. The 35 in the name is meant to honor the 35th anniversary of Fifth Avenue.

The company has turned to the Por Larrañaga brand several times when making Regional Editions, going back to 2006 with the considerably slimmer Por Larrañaga Lonsdale, then the Por Larrañaga Robusto in 2010 and the diminutive Por Larrañaga Corona in 2017.

Given the current situation in Cuba, things move a little more slowly than in other parts of the world, and this 35th anniversary is delayed. Fifth Avenue was founded 37 years ago, in 1989. It commemorated its 30th anniversary seven years ago, in 2019, with a special Bolivar Belicoso Fino.
