The publication flagged it as fake.
An image on TikTok claiming to show the 2 July 2024 cover of the Daily Monitor is ALTERED.
The cover bears the headline, “Youths to march to parliament in protest against corruption.”
The front page contains images of Ugandan Parliament Speaker Anita Among, former Leader of Opposition Mathias Mpuuga, and Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja.
This comes as some social media users attempt to mobilise Ugandans to march to parliament in protest against corruption. The front page was also posted by users on X (formerly Twitter), as seen here and here.
However, did the Daily Monitor publish the alleged cover on 2 July 2024?
PesaCheck conducted a Google reverse image search, which led to the publication’s original cover page shared on X. The cover contains everything seen in the analysed image except for the headline and the central image.
Further investigation shows that the publication flagged the cover under scrutiny on X, terming it fake.
Moreover, PesaCheck performed a keyword search using the headline on the front page posted on the Daily Monitor’s X account and found the corresponding article on its website.
However, no credible results emerged when we conducted the same search using the headline on the cover under investigation.
PesaCheck looked into an image on TikTok purportedly of the Daily Monitor’s 2 July 2024 edition with a headline on protests and found it to be ALTERED.
