Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi received Khalifa Haftar in Cairo on Wednesday, in the presence of Haftar’s sons Khaled and Belgassem, as well as the head of Egypt’s General Intelligence Service, Hassan Rashad.
Egyptian presidential spokesman Mohamed El-Shennawy said Sisi welcomed Haftar’s visit to Egypt, stressing the depth of the fraternal ties between Egypt and Libya and the importance of strengthening the historic bonds between the two countries.
The spokesman said the Egyptian president reiterated Cairo’s firm position on Libya, emphasizing the need to preserve the country’s unity, work toward unifying its institutions, and hold parliamentary and presidential elections.
El-Sisi reaffirmed Egypt’s unwavering support for Libya’s security and stability and for initiatives aimed at achieving those goals. He also stressed Egypt’s commitment to supporting security, development and prosperity in Libya and safeguarding its unity and territorial integrity.
The meeting also addressed opportunities for cooperation between Egypt and Libya, strengthening their partnership and expanding areas of coordination.
Meanwhile, Haftar said he supported initiatives aimed at achieving security and stability in Libya and preserving its unity. He also expressed his commitment to continuing coordination with Egypt to address shared challenges and work toward comprehensive development in Libya.
