New Jersey Explores Hosting 2031 Women’s World Cup at MetLife Stadium

The New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority wants to bring the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup to MetLife Stadium. Officials haven’t committed yet, but they’re willing to talk.

“This summer proved what we already knew: New Jersey is a premier destination for the world’s biggest events. While we have not made a bid, we would welcome the opportunity to bring that energy back for the Women’s World Cup,” Maggie Garbarino said, according to NJ.com.

Garbarino speaks for Gov. Mikie Sherrill. The authority runs the stadium, where the Jets and Giants play.

MetLife Stadium hosted eight matches during the FIFA World Cup 2026, with the final on July 19. That tournament put the venue in the spotlight. It also created issues.

Sherrill criticized several parts of the recent event. The pricey commute via NJ Transit to the stadium drew complaints from fans and residents alike. FIFA’s decision to rename the venue “New York New Jersey Stadium” for the tournament sparked objections from state officials who felt their identity was being pushed aside.

“Any future agreement must recognize the value New Jersey brings to the table and deliver the best possible deal for New Jersey residents,” Garbarino said.

The 2031 Women’s World Cup will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, Costa Rica and Jamaica. FIFA is expected to confirm the host nations in November.

Dates haven’t been announced. The selection of host cities will follow after FIFA confirms the participating nations.
