The Head of the House of Representatives’ (HoR) Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Committee, Youssef Al-Agouri, met with an Italian delegation to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation between Libya and Italy and enhance coordination on a number of issues of mutual interest during a meeting held at the HoR headquarters in Benghazi.

HoR spokesperson Abdullah Blehiq said the Italian delegation included Italy’s Consul in Benghazi, Filippo Campo, and Isabella Lucaferri, Director of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation.

The meeting was also attended by Abdulwahid Al-Lafi, Director of the Office for Parliamentary Policy Support and Research at the House of Representatives, the legal adviser to the Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Committee, and the committee’s secretary, Hassan Al-Dersi.

According to Blehiq, Al-Agouri stressed the importance of expanding cooperation and benefiting from Italian expertise in healthcare, agriculture, fisheries, heritage and archaeological preservation, higher education, and scientific research.

The two sides also discussed prospects for cooperation in the legislative and legal fields, including exchanging expertise in drafting legislation, drawing on comparative experiences and the European Union’s legal framework to support the development of Libya’s legislative system and strengthen cooperation on issues of common interest, particularly migration, development, and economic cooperation.

The meeting also covered ways to enhance parliamentary cooperation, support partnerships between universities and academic and research institutions in both countries, encourage scientific exchange and capacity-building programs, and discuss mechanisms to facilitate the movement of citizens between Libya and Italy.
