Orlando Pirates are believed to have moved swiftly to secure the future of veteran midfielder Makhehleni Makhaula, with indications that the Buccaneers have finalised a one-year contract extension ahead of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season.

As previously reported by the Siya crew, Makhaula was keen to continue his journey with the Soweto giants beyond the expiry of his previous deal, and it now appears that both parties have reached an agreement.

A Siya source with knowledge of the situation has indicated that the experienced midfielder has committed his future to the club for another season.

“Pirates have finalised a one-year contract extension with Makhehleni Makhaula ahead of the new season. He is now contracted to the club until June 2027 and remains an important part of coach Abdeslam Ouaddou’s plans,” the source told the Siya crew.

“The technical team values his leadership, professionalism and experience. They believe he still has an important role to play as the club looks to defend its domestic trophies and challenge strongly in the CAF Champions League,” added the source.

Makhaula is currently in Spain with the Pirates squad as preparations for the new campaign continue under Ouaddou. The Buccaneers are holding a pre-season training camp in Marbella, where they are scheduled to play five friendly matches before returning to South Africa.

The 36-year-old has established himself as one of the club’s most dependable performers since arriving from AmaZulu FC, with his tireless work rate, ball-winning ability and leadership making him a key figure in the heart of midfield.

While the club has yet to make an official announcement, all indications are that Makhaula’s Pirates journey is set to continue for at least another season as the Buccaneers look to build on last season’s success.
