ExxonMobil is pursuing a two-pronged upstream strategy in Angola that focuses on extending production from mature offshore fields while also exploring frontier basins, according to a report from World Oil.

The company’s approach is set to be featured at the Angola Oil & Gas (AOG) 2026 conference, where Brian Unietis, lead country manager for ExxonMobil Angola, is expected to outline the firm’s investment plans and offshore development activities.

Unietis took over leadership of ExxonMobil Angola in late 2025. Since then, he has managed a portfolio aimed at boosting output from existing assets and pursuing new exploration opportunities to help Angola maintain crude production above 1 million barrels per day.

A key recent milestone occurred in April, when ExxonMobil awarded Subsea7 an engineering, procurement, construction and installation contract for the Likembe Redevelopment 2.0 project. That project will connect additional reservoirs to existing Block 15 infrastructure, reflecting the company’s effort to use current offshore facilities to speed up production and improve capital efficiency.

ExxonMobil is also broadening its exploration activities. Earlier this year, it partnered with TotalEnergies and Angola’s National Agency for Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels to secure exploration rights for multiple blocks in the Benguela and Namibe basins. Geological evaluation continues after ExxonMobil completed its first exploration drilling campaign in the Namibe basin, and additional subsurface studies are underway in the Free Areas of Blocks 17/06 and 32/21.

The exploration program complements redevelopment work on producing assets. Last year, ExxonMobil and its Block 15 partners reached a final investment decision to extend production from the Mondo and Saxi-Batuque fields after the block’s production license was extended through 2037.

Beyond upstream developments, ExxonMobil recently awarded Bourbon Mobility a long-term charter for a fleet of fuel-efficient crew transfer vessels that are scheduled to enter service in 2027. The company is also implementing specialized management programs for naturally occurring radioactive material generated from mature offshore operations.
