Sierra Leone’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Alpha Sesay, has, with immediate effect, discontinued the criminal proceedings against former President Ernest Bai Koroma under Section 45 of the Criminal Procedure Act 2024.
President Koroma was charged with treason and misprision of treason but was granted medical bail and flown to Nigeria, where he currently lives.
With this development, President Koroma is now free to return home whenever he chooses.
He was initially detained at his private residence in Goderich and was allowed to receive only a limited number of visitors.
He was later remanded in custody and put on trial for treason.
Koroma ruled Sierra Leone from 2007 to 2018 under the All People’s Congress (APC), which is now in opposition.
His return home is expected to further bolster national unity as the country moves closer to the 2028 elections.
