The 2026 ginger season in Brazil got off to a slow start. According to Hans Dettmann Junior, owner of Gengibre Brasil, the slow start is largely due to weather issues in Europe, which is his primary export market.

Dettmann notes that Europe’s heatwaves have lowered ginger demand among importers temporarily. “Prices are low here in Brazil due to abundant supply and currently low demand,” he stated. However, he expects orders to pick up again from next month as European temperatures decrease.
Despite the modest start, Dettmann emphasized that the harvest’s quality and volume are positive: “This year we have good production and quality,” he stated, forecasting around 80,000 tons for the season, in line with the volume achieved in 2025.

Regarding the North American market, Dettmann noted that, unlike other Brazilian goods affected by tariffs imposed by Donald Trump’s administration, “ginger is still exempt from these tariffs.”
An additional factor that could benefit the Brazilian sector is the difficulties Peru — another major ginger exporter — is facing in the European market. “Peru is facing problems in Europe,” he stated, adding that this is reportedly prompting the country to redirect part of its production to the United States, which could open new opportunities for Brazilian ginger in Europe.
However, the outlook is not without challenges. Dettmann emphasized that production costs in Brazil are very high: “It’s very expensive, it’s far too expensive,” referring to both the inputs and the labor required to sustain the business. “This limits profitability and makes it difficult to compete with ginger from China, which is offered at lower prices on international markets.” He also mentioned that the current FOB price per crate ranges from 14 to 16 euros.

Gengibre Brasil, led by Dettmann, is now in its third year of operation and aims to manage between 30 and 50 containers this year, according to its owner.
