Ex-Flying Eagles boss Aliyu Zubairu secures new job after Telecom SC’s exit

Sudanese club Al Ahli Madani have appointed Nigerian tactician Aliyu Zubairu as their new head coach on a two-year contract, days after he ended his spell with Egyptian second division side Telecom SC.

Zubairu’s move to Sudan comes after his contract with Telecom SC was terminated by mutual consent following discussions between both parties. The Nigerian coach confirmed that the decision was reached amicably, thanking the club’s management, players, technical crew and supporters for their support during his time in Egypt.

The 62-year-old leaves Telecom SC after making a strong impression despite his relatively short stay at the club. He joined the Egyptian side in November 2025 and quickly transformed the team’s fortunes, guiding them to the semi-finals of the Egyptian FA Cup after eliminating several top-flight opponents.

Zubairu’s tactical discipline, team organisation and ability to maximise the quality of his squad earned him praise during his time in Egypt. However, both parties later agreed to part ways, allowing the experienced coach to pursue a new challenge in Sudan.

Al Ahli Madani appointment

The Sudanese club moved quickly to secure Zubairu’s services following the departure of veteran coach Farouk Jabra, whose contract expired.

The Nigerian coach arrives with a growing reputation across Africa, having built a career based on developing competitive teams and achieving promotion success.

His new role at Al Ahli Madani presents another opportunity to showcase his coaching ability outside Nigeria after previous experiences in Egyptian football.

Rise through Nigerian football

Zubairu gained national recognition after leading El-Kanemi Warriors to win the 2024 President Federation Cup.

In the same season, he guided the Maiduguri-based club from the Nigeria National League (NNL) to promotion into the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), further establishing his reputation as a coach capable of delivering results.

His achievements with El-Kanemi Warriors earned him widespread recognition and opened the door for a national team opportunity.

Flying Eagles success

Zubairu was later appointed head coach of Nigeria’s U-20 national team, the Flying Eagles.

Under his leadership, Nigeria won the WAFU B U-20 Championship and went on to secure a bronze medal at the 2025 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations in Egypt.

The Flying Eagles’ performance also helped the team qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile, adding another major achievement to Zubairu’s coaching career.

New challenge in Sudan

With his appointment at Al Ahli Madani, Zubairu begins a fresh chapter as he looks to continue his impressive coaching journey across Africa.

The Nigerian coach will be aiming to bring his experience, tactical knowledge and winning mentality to the Sudanese club as they prepare for upcoming domestic competitions.
