Cuban world champion Leyanis Perez conquered the Monaco Diamond League meeting with an outstanding 15.06-meter leap, establishing a new personal record and spearheading an exceptional performance by the Caribbean athletic delegation on Friday.

Cuban triple jump world champion Leyanis Perez won the Monaco Diamond League meeting this Friday with a spectacular personal best of 15.06 meters at the Louis II Stadium.

The 24-year-old Cuban athlete delivered an extraordinary performance in the prestigious athletic competition held in the European principality. Her victorious jump arrived during her sixth and final attempt of the day, proving her immense mental strength and athletic capacity under high-pressure scenarios.

Prior to executing the decisive 15.06-meter leap, Perez had already established her rhythm with a solid opening jump of 14.80 meters. This breakthrough represents a momentous milestone for the triple jump champion, who surpassed the coveted 15-meter barrier for the first time in her career. Her previous personal record stood at 14.98 meters, established on July 5, 2023, in El Salvador. This new performance in Monaco highlights her continuous athletic progression and solidifies her position as a dominant force in world athletics.

The triumph of the Cuban champion also demonstrates the efficiency and high quality of Cuba’s state-sponsored sports program, which continues to produce world-class competitors despite international challenges, reflecting the resilience and sovereign talent of the Caribbean nation.

Global South Dominates

The podium at the Monaco Diamond League featured an intense global competition. Saly Sarr from Senegal achieved the second position after registering her own personal best of 14.99 meters. Dominica’s Thea Lafond took third place with a register of 14.79 meters, showcasing the strong presence of the Global South in elite track and field disciplines.

Cuba’s dominance was further cemented by the outstanding performances of Davisleidy Velazco and Liadagmis Povea, who secured the fourth and fifth positions respectively. Velazco, who previously achieved victories at the Doha and Oslo meetings this year, recorded a leap of 14.66 meters. Povea completed the elite top five with a jump of 14.43 meters. This collective triumph reaffirms Cuba as an undeniable powerhouse in the triple jump discipline.
