Yasser Ibrahim‘s header gave Egypt the lead, which was doubled by Mostafa Zico in the second half. The Egyptian side could have been 3-0 up but VAR disallowed a goal after spotting a foul by Marwan Attia on Lisandro Martinez.

This was the stroke of luck Lionel Scaloni’s side needed. As Argentina looked dead and buried, Lionel Messi inspired a comeback for La Albiceleste with a goal and assist to book their place in the quarterfinals.

While it was triumph and jubilation for the Argentines, it was utter heartbreak for Mohamed Salah, who was influential throughout the game. The Egyptian captain played a central role in the build-up to Egypt’s disallowed goal as well as their official second goal, but unfortunately, it wasn’t enough.

Salah posted an emotional message for the supporters saying, “I know you’re still upset, but I promise you that I’ll do everything in my power to ensure this marks a fresh start for Egyptian football on the international stage.”

“Qualifying for the World Cup won’t be enough, and just participating won’t cut it either. This team deserves your trust,” he added.
