Mohamed Salah and Egypt were minutes away from creating history in their first-ever World Cup Round of 16 appearance, but unfortunately they couldn’t see it through. Hossam Hassan’s side fell to Lionel Messi‘s Argentina, 3-2.
Yasser Ibrahim‘s header gave Egypt the lead, which was doubled by Mostafa Zico in the second half. The Egyptian side could have been 3-0 up but VAR disallowed a goal after spotting a foul by Marwan Attia on Lisandro Martinez.

This was the stroke of luck Lionel Scaloni’s side needed. As Argentina looked dead and buried, Lionel Messi inspired a comeback for La Albiceleste with a goal and assist to book their place in the quarterfinals.

While it was triumph and jubilation for the Argentines, it was utter heartbreak for Mohamed Salah, who was influential throughout the game. The Egyptian captain played a central role in the build-up to Egypt’s disallowed goal as well as their official second goal, but unfortunately, it wasn’t enough.

Salah posted an emotional message for the supporters saying, “I know you’re still upset, but I promise you that I’ll do everything in my power to ensure this marks a fresh start for Egyptian football on the international stage.”
“Qualifying for the World Cup won’t be enough, and just participating won’t cut it either. This team deserves your trust,” he added.
What’s next for Salah? The Liverpool legend left the club after the 2025-26 season and has been a free agent ever since. There has been significant interest from the Saudi Pro League and MLS clubs.

Fabrizio Romano recently reported, “I wanted to tell you on Mo Salah is that he has a possibility from Saudi because from Saudi they always wanted Mo Salah. Already three years ago, two years ago, Mo Salah has always been a top target.
“But my understanding is that also from the MLS some call took place to understand the situation of Mo Salah and so MLS could be a possibility as well. So MLS, Saudi, let’s see what Salah decides,” he added
But, the Egyptian is expected to take a break after a hectic World Cup before deciding on his next destination.
