This is the first World Cup for Pinheiro, who took charge of the group-stage match between Switzerland and Bosnia and Herzegovina. He also officiated Canada’s win over South Africa in the round of 32.

There may be some extra attention on Pinheiro after Argentina’s controversial 3-2 win over Egypt in the round of 16.

Egypt took a 2-0 lead, but saw Argentina storm back with three late goals to earn a dramatic win. Egypt had a second-half goal ruled out after a VAR review, leading to accusations of conspiracies from Egypt’s coach and players.

After the game Egypt manager Hossam Hassan alleged “the outcome was influenced by internal factors on the pitch inside the game and external factors ahead of the game. There seemed to be pressure on the Argentina side on the referee on this outcome.”
