Haitian TPS extended two weeks as legal fight continues

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Temporary Protected Status for Haitians, which was set to end Friday, has been extended for two more weeks, until July 24.

The extension came in a newly released Department of Homeland Security memo, which says the move is the result of active litigation.

The news broke just as union members at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport were beginning a rally.

Airport officials say close to 200 workers at FLL are on Haitian TPS. Union leaders say many of those workers had been told Friday would be their last day on the job.

County officials and the airport are bracing for the economic impact.

Union members used the rally to call on not only the Trump administration and Congress to act, but also their employers.

The extension brings some relief for Haitians with TPS, but it is not a resolution. The clock is still ticking.

“I’m going to stay and fight,” a TPS worker said.
