History, form set stage for Fed Cup final in Asaba – Daily Trust

History will collide with ambition on Saturday, July 11, as the 2026 President Federation Cup reaches its climax at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State, where El-Kanemi Warriors face Ikorodu City in the men’s final while Heartland Queens battle Nasarawa Amazons in the women’s showpiece.

The final matches of Nigeria’s oldest domestic knockout competition promise two intriguing contests, with historical head-to-head records offering a glimpse into what fans can expect.

El-Kanemi, Ikorodu City renew growing rivalry

Three-time champions, El-Kanemi Warriors, will carry a slight historical edge into Saturday’s 78th President Federation Cup final against first-time finalists Ikorodu City. Since 2024, the two sides have met four times in all competitions, with each club recording one victory while the remaining two encounters ended in draws.

The Maiduguri-based club, appearing in their second Federation Cup final in three years, defeated Ikorodu City 1-0 in their most recent encounter on January 25, 2026, during the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season. The reverse fixture earlier in the campaign ended in a goalless draw in Lagos.

The rivalry gained greater prominence following Ikorodu City’s promotion to the NPFL. The Lagos side secured a 2-0 home victory in their first top-flight meeting in November 2024 before the return fixture in Maiduguri ended 1-1.

Saturday’s final will be officiated by FIFA referee Kassim Abdulsalam from Zamfara State, as both teams battle for the coveted trophy in the 78th edition of Nigeria’s oldest football competition.

Interestingly, home advantage has played a decisive role throughout the rivalry. None of the four meetings has produced an away victory, while two encounters have ended in draws.

El-Kanemi qualified for the final after defeating Wikki Tourists 3-1 in Katsina to keep alive their quest for a fourth Federation Cup title, having previously lifted the trophy in 1991, 1992, and 2024.

Ikorodu City booked their place in the final by edging Nasarawa United 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in Benin City, marking their first appearance in the Federation Cup final after reaching the semi-finals last year.

Nasarawa Amazons target a third title

The 30th edition of the Women’s President Federation Cup final will see two-time champions Nasarawa Amazons take on first-time finalists Heartland Queens in what promises to be an intriguing contest.

Although the rivalry between both sides is relatively young, having begun in the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) in 2023, Nasarawa Amazons hold a slight historical advantage with two victories from their three previous meetings, while Heartland Queens have won once.

Nasarawa Amazons drew first blood with a hard-fought 1-0 victory in November 2023, but Heartland Queens responded by claiming a 1-0 home win in the reverse fixture in March 2024. The Amazons regained the upper hand in their most recent meeting, defeating the Owerri-based side 2-0 in April 2025.

Saturday’s showdown presents a contrast in experience, with Heartland Queens making their maiden appearance in the Women’s President Federation Cup final, while Nasarawa Amazons will be contesting their fifth final as they bid to claim a third title.

This contest will be officiated by Yemisi Akintoye of Lagos State.

Like the men’s fixture, home advantage has proven decisive, with no away side picking up a point in the rivalry.

The contests have also been remarkably tight, producing only four goals across three meetings, an average of just 1.3 goals per game.

Originally scheduled for June 27, the final matches were postponed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to July 11 to allow the participating clubs to complete necessary administrative and logistical arrangements.
