Guinea-Bissau’s Transitional President Horta Inta-A has called a national referendum for Aug. 30 to decide whether a new constitution approved by the National Transitional Council should enter into force, according to a presidential decree published on Monday, News.Az reports, citing Xinhua.
Under the decree, the referendum will be conducted by universal, direct, secret and personal suffrage, with voters casting either a “Yes” or “No” vote on whether to adopt the new constitution.
The decree states that the decision to hold the referendum followed a proposal that received a favorable opinion from the Supreme Court of Justice.
The National Transitional Council has served as Guinea-Bissau’s legislative body since the military takeover in November 2025.
In January, the country’s transitional authorities announced that presidential and legislative elections are scheduled for Dec. 6 as Guinea-Bissau seeks to restore constitutional order.
