Ex-Super Eagles coach await NPFL job

Former Super Eagles assistant coach Salisu Yusuf has parted ways with Beninese top-flight club Coton Sport following the mutual termination of his contract, bringing an end to a successful spell with the side.

The experienced Nigerian tactician leaves the club after guiding them to one of their most successful campaigns in recent years, helping them finish second in the Championnat National du Bénin and secure qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup for the first time in the club’s history.

Yusuf’s departure was confirmed after both parties agreed to end their working relationship, paving the way for the coach to pursue new opportunities elsewhere.

Successful spell in Benin

Yusuf joined Coton Sport with the objective of transforming the club into one of the leading teams in Beninese football, and he achieved notable progress during his first season in charge.

Under his leadership, the club emerged as genuine title contenders throughout the campaign before eventually finishing in second place behind the league champions.

The impressive league finish earned Coton Sport a historic qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup, marking the first time the club will participate in the continental competition.

His tactical discipline, experience and ability to organise the team were widely credited for the club’s remarkable improvement during the season.

Mutual agreement ends contract

Although neither Yusuf nor the club disclosed the specific reasons behind the decision, both parties agreed to terminate the contract amicably.

The mutual separation means the former Super Eagles assistant coach is now free to negotiate with interested clubs ahead of the new football season.

His exit has attracted attention across Nigerian and West African football circles, given his vast coaching experience at both club and international levels.

Yusuf has built a reputation as one of Nigeria’s most experienced indigenous coaches, having managed several top clubs while also serving on the technical crew of the Super Eagles.

Open to new coaching opportunities

Following his departure from Coton Sport, Yusuf is now seeking a fresh coaching challenge.

The former Kano Pillars and Enyimba coach is reportedly open to offers from clubs in the Nigeria Premier Football League as well as teams across other African leagues.

Before taking charge of Coton Sport, Yusuf managed Nasarawa United in the NPFL, where he continued to demonstrate his tactical expertise despite the club facing stiff competition.

His wealth of experience, which includes winning domestic trophies and working with Nigeria’s senior national team, is expected to make him an attractive option for clubs looking to strengthen their technical departments.

Strong coaching pedigree

Yusuf remains one of the most respected coaches in Nigerian football, having enjoyed a coaching career spanning more than two decades.

Apart from his spells with several NPFL clubs, he also served as assistant coach of the Super Eagles, contributing to Nigeria’s qualification campaigns and major international tournaments.

With his successful stint in Benin now concluded, attention will shift to his next destination as clubs prepare for the upcoming season.

Given his recent achievements with Coton Sport and his extensive experience on the continent, Yusuf is expected to receive offers from clubs seeking an experienced manager capable of delivering results both domestically and in continental competitions.
