Avianca is adding a second daily flight to Colombia’s capital of Bogotá next week from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport as the nation’s flag carrier moves its operations at the airport.
The Colombian airline announced Thursday that effective next Monday, it will be operating out of the airport’s Terminal 4, which was once dominated by the now defunct Spirit Airlines.
Previously, Avianca has been operating out of Terminal 1 on the airport’s north side.
Besides the two daily flights to Bogotá, the cities of Barranquilla, Cali and Medellin are also on the airline’s schedule of destinations from the Broward County airport. “For the first time ever, Avianca will be flying to Cali and Barranquilla from FLL,” an airport spokesperson said.
“The move to Terminal 4 will allow Avianca to centralize its operations in a larger space designed to support the airline’s incremental flight activity at FLL,” the company said in a news release.
Inbound international travelers will have access to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection services at the terminal. The airlines with international passengers who pass through the terminal’s federal inspection station are Avianca, Air Transat, Azul Airlines, Flair Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Porter Airlines, and Sunrise Airways.
“Fort Lauderdale is a key market for Avianca, and this relocation reflects our continued commitment to strengthening our operation in South Florida while offering customers a smoother and more efficient travel experience,” the airline said.
Avianca is also updating its systems, distribution channels, signage, and passenger information platforms to reflect the terminal change, the company said. The changes are being coordinated by the airport and the Broward County Aviation Department.
The airline currently operates more than 400 weekly flights to and from the United States. It connects 14 cities across Latin America with U.S. destinations including Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Boston, Dallas–Fort Worth, Houston, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco and Las Vegas on a seasonal basis, among others.
Overall, the airline operates more than 155 routes with over 700 daily flights and a fleet of 140 Airbus A320s and Boeing 787s, connecting more than 80 destinations across more than 25 countries.
