New leadership for sports commission

Under the newly approved structure, Alhaji Tukur Babangida has been appointed Chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission, while Bashir Maizare will serve as Secretary.

Other members of the commission include representatives drawn from key stakeholder groups and sectors considered critical to sports development in the state.

They include a representative of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Alhaji Balarabe Surajo (Wamban Karaye), Ibrahim Abba, Auwal Surajo, a representative of persons living with disabilities, Sunusi Ismail, and Sani Musa Danja, who currently serves as Special Adviser on Youth Affairs.

The composition of the commission reflects the government’s intention to ensure inclusiveness while bringing together individuals with diverse experiences in administration, youth engagement, and sports development.

Observers believe the commission will play a vital role in formulating policies, coordinating sporting activities, and providing strategic direction for sports development at both grassroots and elite levels.

Kano Pillars get new management board

In a parallel development, Governor Yusuf approved the constitution of a new management board for Kano Pillars Football Club, one of Nigeria’s most successful football clubs.

The board will be chaired by Ahmad Musbahu and comprises several prominent personalities with experience in football administration, sports management, and stakeholder engagement.

Members include veteran football administrator Abba Galadima, Sharu Inuwa Rabiu, Fatima Ibrahim Abubakar, Bashir Idris, former Chairman of the Kano Pillars Fans Club, Abubakar Isa Dandago, and Salisu Muhammad Kosawa.

Others are former Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa, who will serve as Sports Ambassador, Chairman of Kano Pillars Fans Club Jamilu Tijani Yamadawa, Senior Special Assistant on Sports Engr. Usman Mustapha K/Na’isa, Murtala Umar, and Kabiru Usman.

The inclusion of Ahmed Musa, one of Nigeria’s most decorated footballers, is expected to strengthen the club’s visibility and contribute significantly to youth mentorship and talent development initiatives.

Restoring the glory of Kano Pillars

Governor Yusuf charged the newly appointed officials to deploy their wealth of experience and expertise towards restoring the glory of Kano Pillars and repositioning sports administration in the state.

The governor emphasised the need for strategic planning, transparency, accountability, and commitment to excellence in the management of sporting institutions.

He expressed confidence that the appointees possess the capacity to strengthen sports development programmes, discover and nurture young talents, and build sustainable structures capable of producing future champions.

For many football enthusiasts, the appointment signals the government’s determination to return Kano Pillars to its position as one of the dominant forces in Nigerian football.

Kano Pillars remains one of the most supported clubs in the country and has a rich history of success in domestic football competitions.

Kano Pillars’ rich football heritage

Founded in 1990, Kano Pillars has established itself as one of Nigeria’s football powerhouses. The club has won multiple Nigeria Premier Football League titles and has represented the country in continental competitions on several occasions.

Over the years, the Sai Masu Gida, as the club is fondly called by supporters, has produced and nurtured some of Nigeria’s finest football talents.

The club’s passionate fan base, strong football culture, and impressive record have made it one of the most recognizable football institutions in the country.

However, like many Nigerian clubs, Kano Pillars has faced challenges ranging from funding constraints and administrative instability to inconsistent performances on the pitch.

Stakeholders believe the newly constituted board has a significant responsibility to address these challenges and restore confidence among supporters.

Sports as a tool for youth development

The appointments are coming at a time when many state governments are increasingly recognizing the importance of sports as a catalyst for youth empowerment and social development.

Kano State possesses a large population of young people with considerable sporting potential across football, athletics, basketball, martial arts, and other disciplines.

Experts argue that effective sports administration can create opportunities for employment, education, social inclusion, and talent development while reducing youth involvement in crime and other social vices.

By strengthening institutional structures such as the Sports Commission and football club management, the government hopes to create pathways through which talented young athletes can achieve national and international success.

Stakeholders welcome appointments

The announcement has generated positive reactions from sports stakeholders, football enthusiasts, and youth groups across the state.

Many have described the appointments as timely, particularly given the growing expectations surrounding the future of sports development in Kano.

Some observers have also welcomed the inclusion of experienced football administrators and former players, noting that their expertise could prove invaluable in addressing long-standing challenges within the sector.

Sports analysts believe the combination of administrative experience, technical knowledge, and grassroots representation within the new structures could enhance decision-making and improve outcomes across various sporting programmes.

Expectations ahead

As the new officials prepare to assume their responsibilities, expectations remain high among sports lovers and football supporters.

The immediate task before the Sports Commission will be to develop sustainable programmes that can identify talents from grassroots communities and provide them with opportunities for growth.

For the Kano Pillars board, attention will focus on strengthening the club’s competitiveness, improving management structures, enhancing player welfare, and achieving greater success in domestic and continental competitions.

With the appointments now confirmed, many stakeholders see the development as the beginning of a fresh chapter for sports administration in Kano state.

If effectively implemented, the reforms could position Kano as one of Nigeria’s leading centres for sports excellence while creating opportunities for thousands of young people to pursue successful careers in sports and related industries.
