Four Gaza Activists Released from Libyan Detention

Four pro-Palestinian campaigners have been released from detention in Libya after being held for about a month, as confirmed by the Global Sumud Flotilla group. The activists, identified as Achraf Khoja from Tunisia, Matias Rodriguez from Uruguay, and Italians Domenico Centrone and Leonarda Alberizia, have arrived in Tunis following their release. Six others are expected to be released in the next 24 hours, according to the organization.

Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani expressed relief regarding the release of the Italian nationals, stating that they, along with Rodriguez, who has Italian citizenship, were handed over to Italy’s consul in Benghazi. He confirmed that they would return to Italy on Wednesday.

The activists were part of a separate group that attempted to reach Gaza by land and were detained by an armed group affiliated with Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan Arab Armed Forces. They were arrested on May 24, 2026, while traveling to negotiate passage for a humanitarian convoy intended to reach Gaza. This convoy was part of a broader effort to break Israel’s blockade of the enclave.

During their detention, the activists staged a hunger strike in protest. They had been interrogated by prosecutors before being placed in pretrial detention on charges related to ‘assembly without authorization.’ More than 400 activists were arrested last month in international waters while attempting to break the maritime blockade imposed by Israel on Gaza.
