CAMEROON has commenced the development of energy accounts to strengthen energy, economic and environmental policymaking through improved statistical data.
The initiative is being supported by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), the National Institute of Statistics (NIS) of Cameroon and the World Bank.
A workshop on identifying requirements for developing the accounts began in Douala on June 22 and will run until June 26.
The workshop brings together government institutions, energy sector agencies and development partners to assess available data and technical requirements.
The energy accounts will be developed under the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA), a United Nations framework linking economic and environmental data.
According to ECA, the accounts will track energy extraction, production, consumption, trade and related environmental impacts.
They are expected to provide data on energy use across sectors and support evaluation of energy policies and investments.
The accounts will also help measure the contribution of the energy sector to economic growth, employment and greenhouse gas emissions.
ECA said reliable and integrated statistics are essential as Cameroon faces rising energy demand, energy security concerns and climate change challenges.
The initiative aligns with Cameroon Vision 2035 and the National Development Strategy 2020–2030, which prioritise industrialisation, structural transformation and energy transition.
The accounts will support monitoring of the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to clean energy, climate action and sustainable resource management.
Officials said the framework would strengthen policy coordination and improve integration of environmental considerations into public decision-making.
The Douala workshop is expected to identify user needs, assess data availability, highlight gaps and develop a roadmap for compiling the accounts.
The project forms part of Cameroon’s National Plan for the Development of Environmental-Economic Accounting, adopted in 2023.
ECA said it would continue providing technical assistance, international expertise and methodological support throughout the implementation process.
