Japan Extends Peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan｜Arab News Japan
TOKYO: On June 19, 2026, the Japanese government announced the revision of its Implementation Plan for International Peace Cooperation Assignments in South Sudan, extending the mission period by one year. The plan, which was set to expire on June 30, 2026, will now continue until June 30, 2027.
According to the Foreign Ministry in Tokyo, this decision follows the United Nations Security Council resolution 2820, which extended the mandate of the United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS) until April 30, 2027.
Japan has been contributing to UNMISS since November 2011, with four Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) staff officers currently stationed in Juba to manage logistics, information, engineering, and air operations.
Japan’s involvement has deepened recently, with a JSDF officer appointed as the Force Chief of Staff at UNMISS in May 2026. The government stated that the continued dispatch is intended to support the peace process in South Sudan, maintain strong engagement with the United Nations, cooperate with neighboring African nations, and ensure opportunities for human resource development.
