Conway residents gather to watch United States in World Cup | Entertainment

CONWAY, S.C. — Residents gathered in downtown Conway on Friday to watch the United States take on Australia in a FIFA World Cup match as the city launched its new “Soccer Under the Sky” viewing series on The Terrace. 

Some attendees arrived about 30 minutes before kickoff to secure seats at the downtown venue, 110 Laurel St. Lawn chairs lined the terrace as fans settled in to watch the match on the city’s new large outdoor screen.

Temperatures reached about 87 degrees during the afternoon.

Attendees used umbrellas, portable fans and other methods to stay cool while watching the soccer game.

Children played soccer on a higher level of the terrace as fans followed the match.

Among those attending was Corbin Green of Conway, who came to the watch party with a friend.

“It’s hot outside, but it beats sitting in my apartment alone, and I will definitely come back to watch the other games,” Green said.

The event marked one of the early installments of Conway’s “Soccer Under the Sky” series, which is expected to feature additional international soccer matches in the coming weeks.

The United States defeated Australia 2-0, giving fans a victory to celebrate as the watch party concluded.

The United States’ next game will be Thursday, June 25 at 10 p.m. — which is slated to be played on The Terrace, according to a graphic posted by the city of Conway. 

The gathering came as Conway recently was named one of 20 finalists for the 2026 All-America City Award, presented by the National Civic League. The award recognizes communities for civic engagement, collaboration and innovation.
