How AFCON 2027 will permanently transform Uganda
When the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) kicks off on June 19 2027, the impact on Uganda will stretch far beyond the pitch. According to national legend Denis Onyango, the tournament is poised to be a massive catalyst for economic and structural transformation across East Africa.
Co-hosting the event alongside Kenya and Tanzania under the Pamoja framework, Uganda is preparing a major rollout of new infrastructure. Onyango emphasised that the physical legacy left behind will elevate the region’s sporting landscape for decades.
“Ugandan football will benefit immensely because we will gain new stadiums, training centres, and sports facilities,” Onyango noted. “This will uplift the entire sports sector, not just football.”
However, the Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper is also looking at the bigger picture. With thousands of travelling fans, journalists, and tourists expected to descend upon the region, the economic boost for local businesses, hospitality, and tourism could be unprecedented.
“Uganda will see widespread development, from new hotels to improved roads. Small businesses stand to gain a lot from the influx of visitors,” Onyango said, highlighting the unique window of opportunity to market the country’s natural beauty.
“The tournament gives us a global platform to showcase our culture, hospitality, and attractions like the Source of the Nile. It’s our chance to show the world what Uganda is truly about.”
With regional transport links and cross-border trade set to tighten, Onyango expects the tournament to unify the three host nations like never before. “Economically, all three countries will benefit. During AFCON, Africa will be in East Africa.”
