Aiko and Infinity Power 1.2GW Module Agreement for Nefer Menya Project in Egypt – News and Statistics

Chinese solar cell and module producer Aiko has finalized a 1.2GW module supply agreement with Infinity Power. The modules are destined for Infinity Power’s Nefer Menya solar-plus-storage project, currently being developed in Egypt.

The deal was unveiled at the African Energy Forum, currently taking place in Cape Town, South Africa. The Nefer Menya project will comprise 1.2GW of solar photovoltaic capacity and a 600MWh battery energy storage system. Infinity Power is a joint venture between Egyptian renewable energy firm Infinity and UAE state-owned developer Masdar. The project has secured financing from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, which boosted its equity stake in Infinity last year.

The EBRD has also provided a loan for another Egyptian solar-plus-storage initiative, the 200MW Benban project, being developed by Infinity Power and HAU Energy.

Omar Magdy, senior procurement manager at Infinity Power, stated that the project required looking beyond standard module specifications. He noted that Aiko demonstrated strong technical performance and a thorough grasp of the region’s specific operational challenges.

Aiko will supply its all-black all-back-contact modules for the project. The company indicated these modules would help address operational challenges in Egypt’s desert environment, such as high solar irradiance, elevated temperatures, and persistent sand abrasion.

Aiko develops ABC technology and this year announced plans to invest roughly US$243 million to support its ABC cell manufacturing, including converting a 5GW passivated emitter rear contact manufacturing facility in China to ABC production.

The company has also been involved in technical lawfare affecting much of the solar sector this year, which led to a licensing agreement with Singapore-based manufacturer Maxeon for its back contact cell and module technology patents.
