Portugal held by DR Congo in 1-1 draw at World Cup 2026

Houston, June 18 (SANA) Portugal was held to a 1-1 draw by DR Congo in its opening Group K match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Yoane Wissa canceled out an early goal from João Neves at NRG Stadium.

Portugal made the stronger start and went ahead in the sixth minute when Neves rose to meet a cross and headed the ball into the corner of the net.

DR Congo gradually grew into the game and threatened through Wissa, who tested the Portuguese defense before eventually finding the equalizer deep into first-half stoppage time (45+5).

The second half saw Portugal dominate possession and push for a winner, but Roberto Martínez’s side struggled to break down a disciplined Congolese defense.

Cristiano Ronaldo came close to restoring Portugal’s lead in the 73rd minute, only to be denied by DR Congo’s back line. At the other end, Cédric Bakambu nearly completed a turnaround for the African side four minutes later, but his effort flashed just wide of the post.

Despite sustained pressure from Portugal in the closing stages, neither side was able to find a decisive goal as the teams settled for a share of the points.

The draw leaves Group K wide open after the opening round of matches. Colombia tops the group following its 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan, while Portugal and DR Congo each begin their campaign with one point.
