BOSTON (TNND) — A Boston police officer traded traditional patrol duties for a more festive form of community policing as thousands of soccer fans gathered at City Hall Plaza for the FIFA Fan Fest.
The Boston Police Department joined international visitors and local residents on Friday to kick off one of its largest fan events tied to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Fan Fest, a free public gathering space featuring live match broadcasts, entertainment, and cultural programming, is expected to draw large crowds throughout the tournament.
A video shared by the department showed an officer interacting with fans, posing for pictures, and participating in celebrations as supporters from around the world converged on downtown Boston.
“Community policing looks a bit different when the FIFA World Cup is in town!” the department noted on its website.
The video shows the officer, who is wearing a high-visibility Boston Police vest, surrounded by a circle of fans as he kicks a soccer ball. The crowd, many of whom are wearing soccer jerseys and some in kilts, cheer him on.
The Fan Fest serves as a central gathering point for fans who do not have tickets to matches, but want to experience the atmosphere surrounding the world’s largest sporting event.
Boston is among the host cities for the 2026 World Cup, which is being held across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
City and public safety officials have spent months preparing for the influx of visitors expected during the tournament. Police have emphasized a strategy focused on both security and engagement, encouraging positive interactions with fans while maintaining a visible presence at major events.
