A member of the Jamaica Defense Force, JDF, was shot and injured on Monday morning during a joint police military operation.
The operation was carried out in pursuit of Demar Williams also called ‘Demon’, ‘Baby Killa’, and ‘Kye Kye’.
The JDF issued a statement, saying the security forces engaged in an exchange of fire with gunmen.
The statement says the soldier was hit, while one of the gunmen was also injured.
That injured man, known only as ‘Scrumbz’, was later pronounced dead.
Demar Williams was one of eight prisoners who escaped from the Black River lockup in St. Elizabeth in June this year.
The JDF says based on information, Williams was hiding out in communities affiliated with the St. Catherine based One Order gang.
The JDF says due to the State of Emergency imposed in St Catherine, Williams and other One Order gang members were provided with safe haven in the Mountain View community.
It says other reports suggest that Williams is a very close associate of a prominent One Order gang member who also frequents the Mountain View Community.
Meanwhile, some residents blocked a section of Mountain View Avenue in protest at the killing by the security forces of a man known only as ‘Scrumbz’.
One resident told our news centre that police entered his premises and spoke to him moments before the shooting.
The resident says ‘Scrumbz’ was a man known for giving jokes and making others happy.
He says residents were upset by the incident as Scrumbz was not the target of the operation.
