New tax reform blocks leakages, double taxation, boosts economy – Ebonyi lawmaker

The Senator representing Ebonyi Central, Senator Ken Eze, said that the new tax reform which has been passed by the National Assembly will block leakages, stop double taxation, put together a unitary taxation and a tax system that works, noting that it will stabilize the economy.

The bill, which is waiting to be assented to by President Ahmed Tinubu, according to Sen. Eze, was properly scrutinized by Members of the National Assembly before its passage, adding that it is a job well done.

Chatting with journalists in his country home at Onueke, Ezza South LGA of Ebonyi State on Saturday, Sen. Eze, who is also Chairman, Senate Committee on Information, maintained that the tax bill is geared towards improving the economy of the country, saying that it is one of the critical achievements of Mr. President.

He noted that Nigerians will be happy with that bill after assent by Mr. President because they have been able to analyze it, subject it to all sorts of tests, and remove those areas they feel may not go well with Nigerians, and add areas they think they can improve on.

Eze maintained that it will sanitize the system, adding that collection of taxes from poor market women taking their produce to market will stop, and poor farmers can enjoy the proceeds from their farms without paying everything to the tax collectors.

His words: “We are talking about the tax amendment bill which has been passed by the National Assembly but is waiting to be assented to by Mr. President. It will block leakages, stop double taxation, put together a unitary taxation and tax system that works. All these are geared towards improving the economy of the country.

“We were able to analyze it, drill it, subject it to all sorts of tests, removed those areas we feel may not go well with Nigerians, and added areas we think we can improve on, so I believe Nigerians will be happy when this new tax system is fully implemented. Everybody will be happy.

“Down to the grassroots, where you see the poor market women taking their produce to market. There are so many people collecting different taxes. These things will be stopped.

“Poor farmers can enjoy the proceeds from their farms without paying everything to the tax collectors. The system will be sanitized. It’s one of the policies of the government, geared towards rejuvenating the economy of this country.”
