WhatsApp stops working on iPhone 6, Galaxy S4, 11 other phone models

From 1 June, WhatsApp ceased to function on several smartphones with older or outdated operating systems (OS), according to the Economic Times.

This significant change was due to WhatsApp’s decision to raise its minimum system requirements, which are crucial for future security and performance.

This update was initially to be effective on 5 May but was delayed to allow users ample time to prepare.

iPhones must now run iOS 15.1 or later, and Android devices need at least Android 5.1.

Support for models like the iPhone 5s, 6, and 6 Plus, the Samsung Galaxy S4, the Sony Xperia Z1, and others has been lost.

This update aims to improve security and performance, as outdated devices can no longer support modern app features.

In December 2024, PREMIUM TIMES reported the need for an upgrade.

Additional reports indicate that iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus and the first-generation iPhone SE will remain functional only if updated to iOS 15.8.4.

Alternative measure

Owners of those models are advised to install the latest iOS iteration to maintain access.

Meta routinely phases out support for legacy operating systems, a proactive measure to ensure the app’s security and introduce enhancements. This approach is aimed at maintaining the app’s reliability and user experience.

The company warned that supporting devices stuck on older software limits its ability to add features such as improved encryption protocols, new status options and advanced group controls.

Users on older hardware have been strongly advised to back up chat histories and migrate to newer devices before June 1 to avoid service interruptions.

Switching

WhatsApp recommends alternative messaging platforms or switching to a supported device for those unable to upgrade. Failure to comply will result in losing WhatsApp functions, including text messaging, voice calls, video calls, and status updates,’’ WhatsApp noted.

Meta’s latest cutoff follows its policy of ending support for outdated operating systems roughly every two years. The company said similar changes will likely occur in 2027 when even more devices fall below required software thresholds.

Android users can check their system version by opening Settings, About Phone, and confirming that Android 5.0 or higher is installed. Any device running a version below Lollipop will be blocked from logging in to WhatsApp.

To verify your iPhone’s software version, open Settings, tap General and select About. If the version listed is lower than 15.1, WhatsApp will cease functioning after 1 June. Users still on older iPhones must either upgrade or uninstall the app.
