A nongovernmental organisation (NGO) known as ‘ADDA Girl Education Foundation’ has created a club for discussion and learning on menstrual hygiene at Government Girls Science Secondary School (GGSSS), Kumo in Akko local government area of Gombe State.
Speaking after the programme, the executive director of the foundation, Samira Galadima, explained that the club tagged ‘Let’s Talk Club’ was meant to serve as a safe space for girls to talk about menstrual hygiene and other life skills.
She added that in addition to the knowledge, the initiative would equip the girls with tools to manage their menstrual health effectively.
According to her, the foundation shared materials including ‘Period Diaries, which enable girls to track their menstrual cycles and maintain hygiene.
“The diaries also introduce girls to The Global #GirlsBillofRights, outlining fundamental rights such as access to quality education and equality,” she said.
“The girls also received What Would You Do? card decks, an interactive tool that helps them navigate real-life scenarios, build healthy relationships, and foster decision-making, communication, and self-confidence.
“According to UNESCO, one in 10 girls in Sub-Saharan Africa misses school while on their period, highlighting the need for proper menstrual hygiene management.”
Principal of the school, Saratu Joda, who said menstrual hygiene management is crucial for girls’ education and well-being, lauded the foundation’s efforts to promote menstrual hygiene awareness and provide essential resources in addressing the challenges.
She added that by engaging girls in discussions about menstrual hygiene and providing them with the tools they need to manage their health, the foundation is helping to break down stigma and promote a culture of empowerment and confidence.
