The Implications of Argentina’s WHO Withdrawal Ratification During US Health Chief’s Visit

Argentina has officially announced its exit from the World Health Organization (WHO) and has reiterated its commitment to enhancing collaboration with the United States (US ) on health issues. This declaration was made during U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy’s visit to Buenos Aires.

The decision, which was first revealed in February by President Javier Milei, reflects a similar approach taken by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who also vowed to withdraw the U.S. from the UN agency.

In a statement justifying this action, the Argentine government criticized the operational model of the WHO. “The WHO’s recommendations are ineffective because they are driven by political interests and bureaucratic frameworks that refuse to acknowledge their own errors,” the statement stated.

Argentina has previously condemned the WHO’s management of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly criticizing its lockdown strategies, which it referred to as a “caveman quarantine.”

The recent announcement coincided with Kennedy’s discussions with Argentine Health Minister Mario Lugones to establish a “joint work agenda” aimed at enhancing “transparency and trust” within the nation’s health system.

“Alongside Robert Kennedy, we are optimistic about the future of collaboration in global health. We share similar perspectives on the way forward,” Lugones said.

Kennedy, who is recognized for his skepticism towards vaccines and his controversial opinions, is anticipated to engage in further discussions with President Milei. 

During the WHO’s annual assembly last week, Kennedy appeared via video to encourage member nations to withdraw from the agency, asserting that it was compromised by influences from China, gender ideology, and the pharmaceutical sector.

In addition to its withdrawal from the WHO, the Argentine government has initiated a “structural review” of its national health institutions. 

The initiative aims to reform regulatory frameworks and enhance transparency in systems that officials claim have been historically burdened by redundancies, outdated policies, and inadequate oversight.
