SA Rugby defends Bok ticket prices

SA Rugby president Mark Alexander says they are trying to keep Springbok Test tickets as affordable as possible.

Tickets for this year’s Bok home Tests recently went on sale, with most priced between R850 and R3,000. Those costing between R250 and R350 were quickly snapped up.

“Rugby Test matches in South Africa remain among the most affordable top-tier sporting events, especially when compared to global tournaments with significant operational costs,” Alexander told the Sunday Times. “While other major international sporting events carry premium pricing, South African rugby continues to prioritise accessibility for fans.”

However, Alexander admitted most South African households don’t have much disposable income and recognised the fact that the Springboks are now regarded as a team of the people.

“That’s why there is a sliding scale in the way prices are set,” he said, adding that hosting Test matches – and having a successful team – came at a big financial cost.

“People want a winning team. And then come the win bonuses.

“It’s tough [to meet budget]. When the money comes in one door it goes out the next. It’s an ongoing battle.

“The minute you open a 50,000-seater stadium there are security requirements you have to adhere to.

“You pay for the visiting team and the assembly of our players. A lot of our players come from outside the country. We have to ensure that there is insurance to cover them if something happens to them.”
